Sunday's Coming
Normal service is resumed. We start a run of three consecutive home
games with a visit from the Rams of Dewsbury. Meetings this season stand
at one-all after a poor defeat in the league back in February was cancelled
out by a narrow win in the Buddies Cup. And it makes a pleasant change
to play the Rams at Spotland as both games thus far have been over the
hill at Ram Stadium.
Dewsbury come here hot on the heels of a big win over fast-improving
Chorley Lynx. Held 12-8 at half time last week they cut loose in the second
half after what coach Andy Fisher called "... a bit of a roasting at half
time...". They racked up 44 unanswered points after the break including
an amazing four tries in seven minutes to run away with the game 56-8.
Leading the charge was scrum-half Carl Briggs who made five of
the Rams' eight tries and - following in the boots of Barry Eaton - finished
with a 100% kicking record for the afternoon.
But it's not a one man show at Dewsbury. Fulback Nathan Batty bagged
a brace of tries last week, ably supported by wingers Craig Miles (2) and
High-speed Adrian Flynn (1). Add to them the experienced centre pairing
of Leigh Deakin and Davide Longo and you have a more than useful threequarter
line.
Up front, non-stop props Frank Watene and Paul Hicks provide the muscle,
with wily Danny Brough slotting in at 9. The back three of Jim Leatham,
Chris Parker and Richard Slater complete a pack that's going to need very
close attention. And if that's not bad enough, Dewsbury have Brad Hepi fit and ready to return.
As for Hornets, Hally'll be keen to end our mini-run of lousy form.
Whitehaven, Barrow and Fev in succession have taken advantage of Hornets
leaky defence, poor ball retention and apparent inability to concentrate
for all six tackles in a set. Let's hope that it's just a mid-season jitter
that most clubs seem to have and that the next month sees a return to something
like form.
It'll be interesting to see if Martin sticks with Latham Tawhai at scrum
half - his own dip in form seems to have taken the rest of the team with
it. Rumblings amongst supporters' ranks suggest they'd like to see Ayres
and Wood in there at half back, but we'll see.
Elsewhere, your guess at the line-up's as good as mine. Ball in the
second row last week was 'interesting' and I'd be looking to find Wes Rogers
a place if only because tackling isn't really Paul Davidson's forte and
that's not good at prop.
But you know how it goes - three consecutive defeats and we're all reduced
to permutation juggling and moaning.
Three home games give us a real opportunity to get our challenge back
on the rails. And in returning to Spotland, it's a chance for the suporters
to unite behind the team and show solidarity with the cause. With Featherstone
at fast-improving Batley, a win will put us right back in the mix - and
you can play a part. Every supporter's contribution is vital and the players
respond accordingly. Yes, it's been a lousy month - but we start again
on Sunday and we give it 100%. See you there.
