Hall slams the system
Monday's Rugby Leaguer & League Express featured the following article.
ROCHDALE Hornets' coach Martin Hall has slammed the RFL Disciplinary Panel, labelling it "inconsistent" and "a complete lottery".And Hall has called for a more uniform system along the lines of those used in Australia's NRL and in soccer.
Hall's blast comes after Hornets' scrum-half Latham Tawhai last week saw his suspension increased from two matches to three, after Hornets appealed against the Disciplinary's initial ruling. Tawhai was not sent off nor placed on report, but he was cited by Hornets' rivals Featherstone Rovers for an incident involving Rovers' star Richard Agar.
"The disciplinary system is farcical, a complete lottery," Hall blasted.
"I have lost all faith in that side of the game. What suspension is handed out depends on which day you go in, and who is sitting on the panel. And I'm not sure some of the people on the panel know enough about the game.
"I have been involved in three hearings in the last twelve months that resulted in suspensions. The first two saw players pick up two and three match suspensions. But the incident involving Latham Tawhai came nowhere near either of those. "There is no consistency there at all. "What we need is a system where there are clear-cut scenarios, and no doubts at all. There are examples in the NRL and football, and it needs to be looked at."
Hall also believes the inconsistency extends to refereeing in the NFP.
"Last week 1 watched two NFP games and they were refereed totally differently," Hall added.
"That is happening every week. How your game is refereed depends on who is in charge."
Tawhai's increased suspension is the latest in a string of controversial incidents involving Hornets over the last twelve months.
They started last summer when Rochdale objected to the number of substitutes used by Widnes Vikings in a play-off game, leaving Hall fuming. Later Hornets' Alliance coach Rob Hall was given a lengthy touchline ban after clashing with referee Steve Ganson in the aftermath of a play-off match against Oldham.
The Hornets' coach has also highlighted the fact that his side has not won a penalty count for twelve matches prior to yesterday's game against Sheffield, and that Tawhai was handed a three-match suspension despite never having been dismissed or suspended in his twelve-year career.
