The pacy winger/centre, who made his debut last weekend against Sheffield Eagles, put pen to paper on Wednesday, after impressing Hornets’ coach Martin Hall with his displays for the A team.

"Lee’s a local lad and with that comes a lot of pride for Rochdale itself," said Hall. "It’s great, and he’s deserved it. Lee’s been a consistent performer in the A team so he’s earned it."

Hall thinks that Wilson can contribute to this season’s campaign, and at only 21 he is also one for the future. Hall added: "Lee’s a good defender, quick, and he’s young and wants to work. Most importantly he has a good attitude which means he has all the basic ingredients. He had a chance on Sunday, he didn’t do anything wrong, and there’s no reason he shouldn’t have other chances before the season is over."

Wilson a former pupil of Springhill High school, Turf Hill Road, has represented BARLA at under 21 level, and Lancashire at open age. He started his rugby career at Mayfield, when he was eight years old, before moving into senior rugby with the Kirkholt club. He is delighted to have signed for his hometown club.

"I was surprised to be offered a contract," he said. "It’s really good to be playing for Hornets."
