Super League Bunfight for Smith
Let's see the colour of their money
A number of Super League clubs are jostling to get their sticky paws on Hornets' playmaker Paul Smith.
Despite rumours of an illegal approach whereby they're supposed to have contacted the player directly, St Helens head the pack, but seem unable or unwilling to put their hands sufficiently deeply into their pockets.
Also interested are Leeds, Hull and Warrington. New Wire Coach Paul Cullen - having seen Smithy run his Whitehaven side around the park two weeks ago - alledgedly contacted Hornets within 24 hours of taking the reins at the Wilderspool crisis club, but again seems unable to comprehend the equation that good player on contract until November 2003 = pay up or give up.
Is it too hard to understand that if these clubs want our best players, we should be compensatred accordingly?
And why would anyone consider Warrington when they'll be playing us next season!
