Even more whining from Oldham 02/09/2002 Jim
More whining from Oldham
Biffs resort to moaning in the press
Jealousy's a terrible thing. Even more terrible than the gap between third and tenth! But when Oldham fans are driven to spit their vacuous vitriol in the Rugby League Press, you know they've finally lost the plot. Brace yourself for some spectacular ranting - and our response!

They never know when to shut up. Not content with blubbing like children on our and their message board, the Biffs’ sad-sack supporters have now taken to writing to the Rugby League Weekly in a desperate attempt to slag off Hornets and detract from the fact that 10th is a long way down the table from 3rd.

And it’s the same old rubbish we always get. Get out your onion - under the heading ‘Roughyeds retain support’ it goes (sic):

“As a very keen Oldham Rugby League fan I cannot believe the amount of luck the people involved at the club - not to mention Chris Hamilton who puts his heart and soul into the club - have been through since the new club was formed in 1997.

The question is how many other clubs would still be stood proud with their heads held high and shouting after so much bad luck? I couldn’t see the likes of Rochdale Hornets could you? Although according to them we are going down.

Well I’ve got news for all you 50 Rochdale fans. As long as we have a chairman like we do, who wears his heart on his sleeve, we will go on fighting and come through everything that is thrown at us.

So to all you 50 Rochdale fans, I hope we meet again in the playoffs and with the spirit of the Oldham players I would put a large bet on them.

And to Chris Hamilton, keep the proud Oldham Roughyeds flag flying because you have the support from the Oldham die-hards - and I can assure you there isn’t just 50 of us.

Name and address supplied.”

Pathetic, I know - especially as Hamilton wasn’t even at the last game.

rochdalehornets.com only thought it fit to offer a reply. It goes:

“Sirs, I'm disappointed that you let your paper be used by Oldham supporters to continue their petty spat with Rochdale Hornets.

Hornets fans have enjoyed seeing our team beat Oldham four times this season and - in the nature of local rivalry - have taken every opportunity to remind them of that.

Equally, having attained third place in the NFP for the second consecutive season while our keenest rivals have been scrambling for ninth place has provided us with a smile or two, too!

But for bitter Oldham fans to slag off a more successful club merely because they have fewer supporters is an indication of how far the once great club of Oldham has fallen. If the 'we've got more fans than you' attitude is all they have left to cling to, it's a sad day for Rugby League at either end of the A627M.

Indeed, Hornets should be congratulated that, on a relatively small supporter base and on a tight budget, we have proven once again that size isn't everything when it comes to being successful.

And Oldham don't have a monopoly on 'spirit'. Hard work, commitment, big hearts and self belief have gone a long way towards ensuring another top three finish for Hornets - the same 'spirit' that your Oldham correspondent refers to in a contribution considered so important that he/she wouldn't put their name to it.

Whether there's 50 of us or not - just check the league table one more time. We've had a great season.

Onward Hornets Onward.”

And to Hamilton, his squad, their supporters and their care assistants, we say - Four-nil!
