Hornets’ chairman Ray Taylor had expressed the hope that the club would meet Oldham at this stage of the season, and he was clearly delighted. His hope now is for the people of Rochdale to turn out in force to shout on the team."We couldn’t have asked for anything better, could we," he said. "I’m looking forward to it. It’s a cracking game in prospect, but will the townspeople be there? The club needs them, and on Sunday the players need them.
"Surely they are not going to allow us to be out-shouted by the Oldham contingent. It’s a split gate, but the more people who come and have a look at us, and see what we can do, the better."
Mr Taylor believes it is an opportunity for Hornets to put the record straight after last year’s agonising defeat by Oldham in the semi-final. He added: "Martin Hall and the team have done marvellously well to finish third two years running. It’s been a remarkable achievement, no doubt about it.
"The three games we have played against Oldham this year have provided sheer entertainment, but those games now count for nothing. The only game that matters is on Sunday.
"It will be a typical Oldham, Hornets derby, and you just hope that supporters will get off their backsides and come to watch us."
The match, which kicks off at 3pm, is all pay. This includes season ticket holders and executive club members. Tickets will be available from the club from 2pm today for those who wish to buy them in advance. The match is not all ticket.
The dining club will be available, and for £25 supporters will get a four-course meal, match tickets, and use of the Motorama lounge.
The Rochdale Observer is sponsoring the match. Mike Pickup from John Lawson Wild and Co is the matchball sponsor.
Hornets’ chief executive Steve Walmsley is still keen to hear from anyone who can help with sponsorship. He can be contacted on 01706 370144.
Admission to the ground is £10 and £5. The main stand and the middle sections of the Wilbutts Lane stand are open, with the latter available to away fans.
