Saints won't pay for Smith
Too big to pay? Too big to care? We say 'Get your money out'.
Super League Minor Premiers St Helens have demonstrated the contempt with which they view the game outside of the elite tier by refusing to pay a fee for Paul Smith. Smith has a year left to run on his contract at Hornets, but has attracted attention from several Super League clubs, with Saints heading the pack - even after allegedly contacting the player direct prior to going through the proper channels. But despite their status as the British game's premier club side, they are loathe to pay for the skills they want. It is reported that Smithy is keen to play for Saints, but if it?s going to cost Hornets our influential player of the year, Saints should compensate us accordingly.
It's a typical example of Super League arrogance and the desire to bully their way into getting what they want by squeezing the smaller clubs - Warrington having done something similar with Batley's Dean Lawford.
Here at rochdalehornets.com, we neither know nor care if Smith has a get-out-clause in his contract, Saints should stop playing the silly buggers, show some respect to the smaller clubs in the game and come to a reasonable financial settlement for the good of the player, for the good of our club and for the good of the game.
Come on Saints - if you think he's good enough, pay-up.
