Top 6 under scrutiny
The Rugby Football League are to scrutinise all six promotion contenders before deciding if they are eligible to enter Super League.

The winners of the National League One Grand Final on October 5 will only be allowed to go up if they meet minimum standards laid down for Super League entry.

The finalists have been assured they will know whether or not they meet the requirements before the showdown at the Halton Stadium, Widnes.

"All six contenders have been asked to submit business plans," RFL executive chairman Richard Lewis said at Wednesday's play-off launch at Salford. "No decision has been made but both the finalists will know it before the Grand Final."

The outcome of the League's deliberations is unlikely to offer a reprieve to Halifax, who have finished bottom of Super League and will be almost certainly relegated.

The minimum standards have been relaxed since the League's famous "Framing the Future" report and clubs now need to prove their have a sound business plan and an 8,000-capacity stadium.

The NL1 and NL2 games will be shown live on Sky television!

In Sunday's sudden-death ties, Rochdale Hornets will be at home to Whitehaven and Oldham go to Hull KR, while in National League Two, Keighley host Hunslet and Barrow go to York.

The top two in each division both have a weekend free, with Leigh visiting Salford and Sheffield hosting Chorley in qualifying semi-finals on Sunday week.

Salford, the minor premiers, are hot favourites to make an immediate return to Super League but coach Karl Harrison is adopting a cautious approach.

"It's knockout football," he said. "We've played two parts of a three-part season. We're into the business end. We've had the upper hand but the season starts again and the next month of football is the one that really counts."

The Reds will be without former Featherstone forward Neil Lowe, who is to undergo a knee re-construction after being injured in Sunday's defeat at Hull KR.
