Sunday's Coming - and so are the Russians!
Games of Rugby League don't get much more interesting than this. Short of drawing Mars away - we couldn't have had a higher profile draw.
The arrival of Dinamo Moscow at Spotland on Sunday has generated more publicity than possibly any Hornets game in recent memory. We take a look at what we can expect.
Well, games of Rugby League don't get a lot more interesting than this. Short of drawing Mars away - we couldn't have had a higher profile draw.
The arrival of Dinamo Moscow at Spotland on Sunday has generated more publicity than possibly any Hornets game in recent memory. And it's a story we're proud to be a part of - yet another footprint left by Rochdale Hornets in the history of our game.
Without doubt, information on Dinamo is pretty scarce - but we've had a bit of a dig around...
Dinamo Moscow turned a few heads when they disposed of West Bowling in the last round of the Challenge Cup.
The 22-18 win over the Bradford amateurs gave the Muscovites the historic honour of becoming the first Russian team to win a match in the famous knockout competition - succeeding where Strella Kazan and Locomotiv Moscow failed last season.
With a discipline problem borne of naivity (they conceded seven consecutive penalties for play the ball offences in the last round) Dinamo trailed against West Bowling until the 68th minute.
Kiwi imports Lee Finnerty, Paul Fisiiah and Siali Tufeo provide the studied guile and professional influence to keep Dinamo on track.
Indeed, it was Finnerty - who played with Halifax last season - who sent giant second rower Kirill Koulemine over for the match-winning try.
At 6 foot 8 inches, Koulemine provides the grunt in the pack and his juggernaut size resulted in two tries in the previous round. Seems he plays the enforcer role too - having spent a spell in the sin bin for interference. He's partnered up front by recent league convert Georgui Vinogradov.
Other try scorers at Bankfoot were Russian international centre Sergei Dobryne and winger Vladimir Trofimov - both of whom have joined Wests Tigers in Sydney on a three week trial.
And that's about all we know about the starting 13 - never mind the Russian subs!
For those of you who've been away on Mars since New Year, Bobby Goulding's World Famous Rochdale Hornets make their home debut on Sunday. The media love Bobbie and there's no doubting that his high profile has garnered more column inches for Hornets over the last month than we've had over the last decade. We even had two consecutive full pages on teletext last night - unheard of!
But amidst the media scamble, Bobbie will be bitterly disappointed about last week's game at Hunslet. We all know that we're taking our first few steps on what we hope will be a long and interesting journey, but the little fella wants to win on every outing. And you can't knock that.
Whilst his infectious enthusiasm has resuscitated our club, he'll be looking for a tighter performance from 'New Hornets' this weekend - greater awareness, greater concentration at key moments and the sort of defensive performance that thwarted the Hawks for the last 39 and a half minutes.
Even at this early stage, players are starting to catch the eye. Janan Billings looks sharp and a bit handy at Hooker; Liam Williams looks lightning fast; Michael Platt looks solid at full back; Paul Anderson almost looks for too much work at centre and Andy Gorski looks quite happy tackling everything that moves.
Add Lee Birdseye's expansive game and Sam Buttorworth's box o'tricks at half back and we have the platform for a very useful unit.
And we do have a team that grafts. Bobbie promised us 110% every week win, lose or draw and that's all we can ask. But this side will gel with time - we just have to be patient and give them all the support we can.
Sunday's game should be a great spectacle. International Challenge Cup action right here in Rochdale. Good for the game, good for the town and very good for our club.
The Chinese have a proverb that says 'May you live in interesting times'. Rugby League doesn't get more interesting than Rochdale Hornets at the moment. Bring a mate - it'll be a cracker.
See you there.
