Tag Team match report
Hornets’ supporters emerged beaten but unbowed from the Wakefield and District Tag Rugby League Tournament. After a late re-jig of the draw Hornets Supporters were drawn in the "group of death" against teams that would finish in the competition in 1st, 3rd and 4th places out of the twelve teams.
Hornets Supporters opening fixture was against the eventual winners of the Competition Halifax. The Fax supporters took any early lead and pressed home their greater experience, having played Tag Rugby League for several seasons.
But Hornets fans rallied in the second half and through excellent footwork from Gareth Nagy scored a try started in there own half.
Hornets Fans second fixture was against pre tournament favourites the Hull Irregulars (fans of Hull FC).
By this time though the Hornets Supporters had found their feet and took the game to the current Tag Rugby League Champions. The Hull side finally broke through with an interception try but not before Lauren Pilkington Steel pulled off one of the tackles of the competition diving at full stretch to stop a certain Hull score.
Hull scored again but Hornets rallied once more with Scott Manock drawing the Hull defenders and sending a perfectly weighted pass to Dave Tyson who stood up the Hull marker to score in the corner.
Hull became a little frustrated and pushed the limits of the contacts rules but this only served to fire the Hornets Fans up who camped on the Hull line but couldn't just find the gap and while pushing forward another loose pass gifted Hull another score. With the game drawing to a close Hull scored two quick tries but the final word went to Hornets after cousins Nicola and Emily Wynn had made half breaks on the right wing the ball was shipped left were father and son combo Craig and Gareth Nagy Inter passed for Gareth to score on the final whistle. The Hull players awarded Hornets Mark Wynn the man of the match for the real tussle the game had been.
Hornets Fans final group match was against the Leythers’ MB XIII, (fans of the Leigh Club). The match started well for Hornets with Ste Mason being tackled just short of the line and Scott Manock breaking through the middle only for the final pass to go agonisingly to ground.
Hornets then picked up a couple of injuries to their pace men Craig Nagy and Dave Tyson which severely restricted there options but they still were able to produced some great moves especially when Maria Wynn found the gap for daughter Nicola who was just tackled short of the line.
The injuries began to take their toll and Leigh ran in a few scores, Craig Nagy then pulled a hamstring which meant Hornets had no Subs.
With defeat to Leigh, Hornets final game was against a combined Dewsbury and Wakfield side again Hornets got off to a good start with Scott Manock scoring after a Ste Mason break but then Dewsbury replied in kind, Hornets scored but Dewsbury were able to score on the stroke of half time to make it 2-2.
In the second half the lack of subs took its toll and the Dewsbury/Wakefield side scored three easy tries to leave Hornets too much to do but Hornets had the final say scoring the last try of the game.
All in all a fantastic effort by the Hornets Supporters who are entering the IMBRL Tag Rugby League Merit League next season.
