"Ferrybridge. Its platoon of cooling towers is the front gate of South Yorkshire. Pass through and you're in the boiler house of the region - Rotherham; Sheffield; Doncaster..." "... For sport it nurtures Rugby League. Teams like Castleford and Featherstone Rovers. Teams that win, for winning is not just hoped for here, it's expected. But there is one team that's different. Doncaster. It loses." The newly monickered and supposedly fearsome Doncaster Dragons did an admirable job of rolling back the years on Sunday. In the 20 years that have passed since the words of the introduction accompanied Doncaster's muddy defeat against Swinton across our screens the world has changed. Not that you'd have noticed. In the footsteps of honest grafters like Banham; Parkhouse and Pennant now walks Doncaster's team full of waning big names - Amone; Tawhai; Hall; Cook; Hepi. And they're not fit to lace their drinks. Sixteen minutes in Dave Watson made a striding break through the heart of the Doncaster defence. One tackle later Darren Robinson was collecting a peach of a pass from Danny Wood to crash through a static defensive line. Wood converted. Watson left the fray bloodied; dazed; limping. First Danny Sculthorpe took up Watson's mantle. Sweeping 35 yards; drawing in defenders; releasing a superbly timed pass - only to see it put to ground by the supporting Newall with the line beckoning. Then Robinson. Exploiting the gap; devouring the yards; spoilt for options - but choosing none. Tacklers descended and the danger passed. Wood and Irving exchanged penalties - the latter for a difference of opinion between Hepi and Stephenson - Half time, 8-2. Doncaster emerged from the break ennervated; motivated. For 26 minutes they lay seige to the Hornets' line, their position guaranteed by a series of dubious refereeing decisions. Irving accepted two shots at goal and succeeded. 8-6 - and Doncaster's contribution was over. Hornets began to edge away. Wood provided the impetus with a close range penalty. Momentum was gained as first Darren Robinson mined a try from acting half then Wood shrugged off the defence to reach through and score. Irving's penalties looked a little sad at 20-6 and the travelling Don's headed for the exit with 9 minutes remaining. Shame - because they missed a perfectly executed killer blow. Wood carving the space; Calland in support; the pass swift and clinical; the run to the line unchallenged. The victory complete. Hornets made a mockery of the league table. The win was convincing; comprehensive. We look revived - o rganised; eager; workmanlike. Not very much like a Hornets side at all. It augurs well for our cup adventure. As for Doncaster - wherever they go, they're tarred with Another Bloody Sunday's cruel brush. And on this performance, they deserve it. | |||
